OBJECTIVE:

The course will be based on introductory lectures completed by directed, computer-based tutorial with experts and local tutors.  It will place emphasis on developing a conceptual understanding of the basic methods and on their practical application, rather than the manipulation of mathematical equations.  The methods will be illustrated by "hands-on" experience of setting up models in spreadsheets as well as other specialist modelling packages, small group work, and seminars in which recent applications of infectious disease modeling to public health problems will be discussed.

The workshop will provide the successful applicants, selected by an ad hoc committee, with an understanding of new approaches developed in public health surveillance and operational research.  After completion of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Construct and interpret simple mathematical models of infectious disease transmission and control.
  • Understand the modern use of infectious disease modeling in public health
  • Define the necessary strategies and organize the effective management of epidemics

By the end of the course participants will have deepened their current understanding of infectious disease epidemiology and have gained practical experience of the basics of infection disease modelling, which will be useful in their future work.
An additional objective of this course series is to create a network of team leaders in South East Asia equipped with knowledge of best public health practices and available for rapid coordination to a public health emergency of national or international concern.

PARTICIPANTS' PROFILE:

The course is specifically designed for health personnel, mainly but not exclusively from countries in South East Asia, including medical and health professionals, policy makers, veterinary scientists, medical statisticians and infectious disease researchers interested in expanding their knowledge of the techniques available for analyzing and interpreting epidemiological data on infectious diseases and for predicting the impact of control programs. Specialist mathematical training is not a prerequisite.

The course will be taught in English. Trainees should have a clear understanding of spoken and written English. Limited to 24 participants.

APPLICATIONS:

The course teaching committee will review applications and select participants who will be notified before the end of September and will receive an invitation letter together with details on local arrangements.

Please download and return the completed form, including:

  • A covering letter explaining the reasons for participating in the course
  • A detailed CV
  • 1-2 recommendation letter(s)

to hku-pasteur@hku.hk before 5 September 2016.

No registration fees – Support for accommodation will be provided to participants – Deadline for applications 5 September 2016 - Limited to 24 participants.
